# Shopify Product Photo Backgrounds: White, Studio, or Lifestyle? (2026 Guide)

> White background or lifestyle? See where white, studio, and lifestyle product photos work best on your Shopify store, based on Shopify's own photography guide.

*Last updated: October 28, 2026*

Every Shopify product photo has a background, and it shapes what a buyer notices first. Shopify's own photography guide groups product photos into several common types. Three of them differ mainly in the background: white, studio, and lifestyle.

This guide compares Shopify product photo backgrounds side by side: when to use white, studio, and lifestyle, what Shopify and marketplaces require, and how to combine them.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Quick answer:** Use a white background for your main image, then add studio or lifestyle shots to the rest of your gallery. Shopify calls white background shots the foundation of most product pages, and many marketplaces require them for the main image. A studio background, such as a colored backdrop or a textured surface, shows the product clearly with a planned look that fits your brand. A lifestyle background shows the product in use and helps buyers picture owning it. While Shopify doesn't require a white background, it notes that most successful product pages combine several of these styles.

## White background vs. studio vs. lifestyle

| Background | What it shows | Where it works |
| - | - | - |
| White | The product's shape, color, and key features with no distractions in the frame | Main product images, marketplaces like Amazon and Etsy |
| Studio | The product in a planned set: a colored backdrop, a textured surface, or a styled tabletop | Product pages, catalogs, product launches |
| Lifestyle | The product in use in a real setting | Product pages, social media, homepage hero images, email marketing |

## White background

A white background removes everything except the product. Shopify calls these shots "the workhorse of ecommerce photography."

* **Main image:** Buyers see the shape, color, and key features at a glance.
* **Collection pages:** When every main image shares the same white background, your catalog looks consistent and your store is easier to browse.
* **Marketplaces:** Many require a white main image. More on this below.

Aim for pure white. Shopify notes that off-white and cream backgrounds are harder to edit to pure white later.

## Studio background

A studio shot places the product in a planned set. Shopify's examples include a colored backdrop for skin care, a textured surface for jewelry, and a styled tabletop for home goods.

We recommend a studio background when you want the clarity of a clean shot with a look that matches your brand. Keep the product as the main focus, and add props only when they show scale, use, or brand style.

## Lifestyle background

A lifestyle shot shows the product in use in a real setting. It helps buyers imagine owning it, and Shopify notes it works especially well for emotional buying decisions, where aspiration matters as much as function.

Shopify's own example shows the difference: a coffee mug on a cozy desk in morning light tells a different story than the same mug on white seamless paper.

## Does Shopify require a white background?

No. While Shopify recommends white for main images, its help center describes "a variety of background options depending on your budget."

For your Shopify store, the background is your choice. For image sizes and aspect ratios, see our [Shopify product photo guide](https://modoai.io/docs/blog/shopify-product-photos-without-a-photographer.md).

## Selling on Shopify and a marketplace

Amazon requires the main image on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product filling 85% of the image. Check the latest rules in [Amazon's product image guide](https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/external/G1881) before you upload.

If you sell on both Shopify and a marketplace, we recommend this split:

* **Main image:** One white background shot, used on every channel.
* **Shopify gallery:** Studio and lifestyle shots, where the choice is yours.

## How ModoAI approaches it

ModoAI works like an in-house Creative Team for your product photos. You upload one front-view photo of your product. ModoAI analyzes the product, recommends styles and explains why, and proposes concepts built to sell. You pick a concept, and ModoAI creates the shots.

From that one photo, you can create shots across all three background types: Clean for your main image, Color Pop or Editorial for a studio look, and Lifestyle, Minimal, or Natural for your gallery. See all six in our [style guide](https://modoai.io/docs/style/overview.md), or [learn how ModoAI works](https://modoai.io/docs/start/what-is-modoai.md).

## A pre-upload checklist

* Main images use a white background, or one shared background across the whole catalog
* White backgrounds are pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255), not off-white, light gray, or cream
* Every prop shows scale, use, or brand style
* If you sell on a marketplace, the main image meets its white background rule

## Shopify product photo backgrounds: FAQs

### Does Shopify require a white background for product photos?

No. Shopify recommends white for main images and describes a variety of background options. Marketplaces like Amazon are the exception: they require a white main image.

### What's the best background for a Shopify main image?

White, in most cases. It shows the product's shape and color clearly and keeps your collection pages consistent. If your brand has a signature color, a studio backdrop in that color can work too, as long as every main image uses it.

### When should I use lifestyle photos?

When buyers need to picture the product in their own life, such as apparel, footwear, and home goods. Shopify lists product pages, social media, homepage hero images, and email marketing as good places for them.

### Can one product photo give me white, studio, and lifestyle shots?

Yes. With ModoAI, you upload one front-view photo and choose from concepts across six styles, from a Clean main image to Lifestyle scenes.

The right background keeps the buyer's eye on the product, and that is where the sale starts.
