# Consistent Product Photos for Shopify: How to Match Your Whole Catalog (2026 Guide)

> Make your Shopify product photos consistent across every collection: what to standardize, how to write a photo style guide, and how to fix a mixed catalog.

*Last updated: November 6, 2026*

Consistent product photos make a Shopify store look like one brand. On a collection page, buyers see your main images side by side, so any change in size, background, or light shows up right away.

This guide shows how to get consistent product photos for your Shopify store: what to standardize, how to write it down, how to keep it during a shoot, and how to fix a catalog that already looks mixed.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Quick answer:** To keep Shopify product photos consistent, set one standard and apply it to every product: one aspect ratio for main images, one background, the same framing and light, and the same basic edits. Start with the aspect ratio. Shopify notes that main images saved in different aspect ratios display at different sizes on collection pages. Write the standard down as a photo style guide, keep the camera in one position during each shoot, and check new photos on the collection page before you publish.

## What to standardize

| Element | What stays the same |
| - | - |
| Aspect ratio | One ratio for every main image |
| Background | One background for main images, most often white |
| Framing | The product framed the same way across the gallery |
| Light and color | White balance set to your light source, images exported in sRGB |
| Editing | The same basic edits on similar images |

Two more details are worth writing down, as covered in our [Shopify product photo guide](https://modoai.io/docs/blog/shopify-product-photos-without-a-photographer.md): camera height and the margin around the product.

## Start with the main image aspect ratio

Shopify's help center explains that product images placed side by side on collection pages display at different sizes when they use different aspect ratios. To make them display at the same size, use one aspect ratio for every featured, or main, image.

Some themes request consistent sizing from the Shopify CDN for images saved in different ratios. We recommend fixing the files themselves, so your images look the same in every theme and channel.

* **Pick one ratio.** Shopify's photography guide notes that square images (1:1) work well for consistent grid layouts.
* **Crop before you publish.** Shopify's media editor lets you crop finished images to a consistent aspect ratio before they go on product pages.

For image sizes and file specs, see the spec table in our [Shopify product photo guide](https://modoai.io/docs/blog/shopify-product-photos-without-a-photographer.md).

## Write a photo style guide

Shopify suggests a photography style guide that records saturation, color, lighting, and subject matter, so every photo follows the same rules. We recommend keeping it to one page:

* **Main image:** aspect ratio, background, and margin around the product
* **Camera:** height and angle
* **Light:** direction and color temperature
* **Editing:** the basic edits every photo gets
* **Lifestyle shots:** your brand colors and the kinds of settings you use

Then apply it to every launch. The guide matters most when a product goes live in a hurry and there's no time to decide again.

## Keep the setup fixed during a shoot

Shopify's photography guide recommends keeping the camera and tripod in the same position and rotating the product instead. It keeps shots consistent and cuts editing time later.

* Tape the background in place so it doesn't shift between products.
* Use a softbox to diffuse light evenly. Shopify notes it helps keep results consistent even when the room's light isn't ideal.
* Keep the product framed the same way across the gallery.

## Match color across shoots

Light has different color temperatures, and they can change how a product's color looks. Shopify recommends three steps:

* Set your camera's white balance to match your light source.
* Include a gray card in a test shot to calibrate later.
* Export images in the sRGB color space so they look consistent across web browsers.

We recommend repeating the gray card test at the start of every shoot, so photos from different days match.

## Consistent lifestyle shots

Lifestyle scenes change from product to product, so consistency comes from your brand colors and light. Shopify suggests choosing locations and props that complement your brand's color palette. For editing, Shopify recommends adjusting each lifestyle photo on its own rather than applying one preset to every image, while keeping colors true to life.

For how to choose the scene itself, see our [Shopify lifestyle product photos guide](https://modoai.io/docs/blog/shopify-lifestyle-product-photos.md).

## Fixing a catalog that already looks mixed

If your store already has photos from different shoots, we recommend working in this order:

1. **Look at each collection page the way a buyer does.** Mismatches in size, background, and light stand out when images sit side by side.
2. **Fix the aspect ratio first.** Crop main images to one ratio. It's the fastest change and the most visible.
3. **Replace main images that break the standard.** Start with your best sellers, since the most buyers see them.
4. **Then work through the galleries.** Bring detail and lifestyle shots in line with your style guide.

## How ModoAI approaches it

ModoAI works like an in-house Creative Team for your product photos. You upload one front-view photo of your product. ModoAI analyzes the product, recommends styles and explains why, and proposes concepts built to sell. You pick a concept, and ModoAI creates the shots.

For a consistent catalog, use the same style and ratio for each launch, such as Clean at 1:1 for main images. Saving your brand info keeps the proposed concepts on-brand. If your catalog already looks mixed, you can recreate main images from your existing product photos in the same style, starting with your best sellers. Compare concepts before you create, and if a shot doesn't match the rest, describe the fix in one sentence in Edit and name what should stay the same. See how to save brand info in our [style guide](https://modoai.io/docs/style/overview.md), or learn [how to write an edit request](https://modoai.io/docs/tips/direction.md).

## A pre-upload checklist

* Every main image uses the same aspect ratio
* Main images share one background and the same framing
* Colors match the real product, and files are exported in sRGB
* New photos follow your written style guide
* The collection page looks even when you scroll through it
* Each photo answers a question the buyer actually has

## Consistent product photos on Shopify: FAQs

### Why do my Shopify product images display at different sizes?

Usually because the main images use different aspect ratios. Shopify's help center notes that images placed side by side on collection pages display at different sizes unless the featured images share one aspect ratio.

### How do I make all my Shopify product images the same size?

Choose one aspect ratio and use it for every main image. You can crop finished images in Shopify's media editor before they go on product pages. Square (1:1) works well for grid layouts.

### Do lifestyle photos need to match my main images?

They don't need the same background, since each scene is different. Keep your brand colors, light, and true product color the same, and your gallery will read as one set.

### Can ModoAI keep my product photos consistent?

Yes. Save your brand info, then use the same style and ratio for each new product. Compare concepts before you create, and use Edit for small fixes. The [quickstart](https://modoai.io/docs/start/quickstart.md) walks through each step.

When every photo follows one standard, buyers compare your products side by side, and that comparison is where a purchase decision gets made.
